Apparently I have two blogs and this was originally posted to the wrong one, so here it is now.
I apologize for this post being a week late. But let's get to it
shall we? This week was candied bacon weenies. It was a super simple
recipe, but it takes forever. I also discovered that slower cookers are
not as easy as they seem. You start out with a pound of bacon cut into
thirds and you wrap those around one package of little smokies or any
other cocktail wiener brand. Securing the bacon with tooth picks. I did
this at a steady pace, but it still took me almost a half hour to fill
the pan.

Then you sprinkle on three quarters of a cup of brown sugar.
Which didn't seem like much to me until I actually started putting it
on. I ended up with a good size clump on top of each one. Then you bake
them for forty minutes in a 325 degree oven. You are supposed to turn
them after twenty minutes. I did not, but there was no harm done. after
they are done in the oven it's time for the slow cooker! This is where I
encountered an issue. I did exactly what I was supposed to. I placed
them in the slow cooker, sprinkled them with another three quarters of a
cup of brown sugar, and poured the twelve ounces of cola on top and set
it to high.

This was mistake number one. The recipe says half of a
twelve ounce can. I added all twelve. That probably made a big
difference. Well I let them cook for the full four hours. I checked in
on them half way through and they looked fine. But after four hours I
find these little black rocks of death. It was way more than just the
cola issue. That shouldn't have made them char. I believe that four
hours is just a bit too long. It would take a little more trial and
error to get the right time down. I don't blame the recipe though. All
cooking devices are different. The person who posted the article might
have a slow cooker with a high setting that is ten degrees lower than
mine. Which after four hours, can make a severe difference. So that
should be lesson number one. Recipes are not laws. Don't be scared to do
something different with them if your judgement says to. That's all
for this week. Next week I will hopefully be constructing my first bacon
weave with a special guest Mark Morris. If schedules do not permit,
then I'll find some alternate recipe and the bacon weave will be pushed
back.
-10¢ To Add Bacon

P.S.- My puppies Shadow (the big one) and Yoda (the little rat) still enjoyed them.

Hmm seems interesting, aside from them turning out as "little black rocks of death", I might just have to try them. Also another idea you just try is some sort of bacon dish from different countries. Good post!
